As part of its commitment to those values, throughout the month of June, the University of Kentucky Office of LGBTQ* Resources, a unit housed in the Office for Student Success, will observe Pride Month.

The public is invited to celebrate inclusive storytelling at the Juneteenth Banned Books & Literacy Festival. Hosted by the Education and Civil Rights Initiative (ECRI) at the University of Kentucky College of Education, the festival takes place Friday, June 16 (virtually) and Saturday, June 17 (in-person).

Ann Switzer has blazed a trail at UK for other students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She offers a piece of advice for any student who is looking to continue their education and find their community: “No matter how old you are right now if college is something you think you want then work hard in school starting today. At UK in the CCS program, you will have to study, read and write a lot, but it is great. The staff and mentors in the CCS program will help you and your family all they can, but you must do the work.”

Health Sciences grad finds pride in herself, her culture at UK

Moncerrat Bravo Alvarez started going by “Monce” when she was a little girl. Growing up in rural Monticello, Kentucky, she looked around her classroom and began noticing that she was different than most of her classmates in more ways than one. She looked different, ate different food and spoke a different language. At times, she wanted to hide who she was.

Ph.D. student from Lebanon fulfills lifelong dream at UK

"Growing up in Lebanon where the political climate was unstable and later on with the Syrian war going on, it seemed like you’re living in a zone that is always susceptible to conflicts,” said Ammar. “When I was young, I always had this dream of going to college and studying engineering, as a first-generation student and where no one my family is an engineer, finding my way to college was challenging.”

Op-ed: Student-run organization works to combat period poverty

Conversations with Kentucky teachers and school social workers all ended with a common concern: students throughout our state face barriers to accessing menstrual hygiene products and education. As a result, Take a Tampon provides menstrual education to local high school students and advocates for state legislation addressing experiences of period poverty.

UK Black Alumni Reunion to be held April 13-15

The University of Kentucky Black Alumni Reunion is an opportunity to cultivate community through a weekend of engaging educational experiences, social events and networking opportunities. The event is scheduled for April 13-15, 2023.  In the spirit of Harambeè, defined as “a coming together,” the reunion serves as a chance for Black alumni to gather, reconnect, socialize and come together.
