The University of Kentucky Martin Luther King (MLK) CenterMartin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and EnvironmentLewis Honors CollegeCollege of Arts and Sciences, and Department of Hispanic Studies are hosting “Cafecito con Chavez: An Evening with Eduardo Chavez.”

The event will take place in the Gatton Student Center’s Harris Ballroom from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5.

Eduardo Chavez is notable for his work as a filmmaker and speaker but takes pride in his lineage which descends from two civil rights icons: César Chávez and Max Lesnik.  The release of his feature documentary, “Hailing Cesar,” in 2018, gave audiences a look into both his political and activist background.

Apart from filmmaking, the co-founder of Latindia Studios captivates audiences during his thought-provoking discussions with Latinx individuals in his podcast “We Are Latinx”.

Chavez will share insights into his journey of creating a meaningful legacy through activism, directing and various media platforms. His dedication to championing the rights and causes of the Latinx community is truly inspiring, and the university eagerly anticipates the valuable perspectives he will bring to the audience.

“This is a great opportunity for the Latinx and Hispanic community of UK and Lexington to have Eduardo Chavez come to UK,” President of the Latino Student Union Carlos Verea Zacaria said. “It allows us to explore what Chavez has done and how his grandson has continued his work and improved on and how he himself has deviated from the negative aspects of his grandfather’s belief.”

Moderated by Sofía Mena Molina, Ph.D. student and student teaching assistant within the Department of Hispanic Studies, the event will detail Chavez’s legacy and strenuous efforts to advance education on the Latinx experience. Audience members are encouraged to engage with Chávez and ask questions about his inspiring work.
